Goldie Childers Orphanage Scrapbook

IOOF Widows & Orphans Home and Midway Female Orphan School

Lexington KY

The IOOF Widows and Orphans Home photo (Page 16 in Album) was taken in 1899 which was about the time she entered the orphanage. Goldie noted the names of persons in photo on the back; however, she is not in the photo.  This photo was in her things and I added to the album scan.  Plus I added another very large photo from her things of a gathering at Midway; I am assuming it was probably a reunion however there was no date or names on the back of the photo. I did confirm with Midway College that this was taken on their campus.  The photo is on hard cardboard like paper and folded in middle due to size thus you see a lot of deterioration in the middle part.  I scanned a left side and a right side, see 1AAA1 and 1AAA2.  Not absolutely sure Goldie is in the photo but think she may be. Original photo is in my possession.

Also attached is a copy of an essay “In Retrospect”, an autobiography written for a college class regarding her life in these institutions. She attended both Morehead College and University of Kentucky where she graduated in 1958.  Unfortunately there is no date on the essay but I believe this may have been for a Morehead English Class.  A note to and from “Miss Humphrey” is at bottom of essay.  Inez Faith Humphrey taught English at Morehead.

Goldie Price Childers 1894-1974 was a native of Lawrence County, Kentucky, raised in the Odd Fellow’s Widows and Orphans Home in Lexington, KY until her Junior Year of High School when she transferred to Midway Female Orphan School where she graduated high school in 1913.  She returned to Lawrence County upon graduation. She taught more than 30 years in one-room schools in Lawrence County, KY, including Richardson, Peach Orchard, Preston Gap, and Georges Creek.

The scrap book  is currently in possession of Mrs. Judy Burgess of Richardson, Lawrence County, KY. I borrowed a few years ago to scan. Goldie was our grandmother.
